Dr. Grant MacEwan: A Life of Dedication and Service


When we think of Edmonton's most impactful citizens, the name Dr. Grant MacEwan often tops the list. A historian, author, professor, mayor, and lieutenant governor, Dr. MacEwan was a Renaissance man, passionate about agriculture, conservation, and community.

1. Prairie Beginnings: 1902-1914
Born in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1902, Grant MacEwan's early years were shaped by the vast Canadian prairies. His family moved to Calgary when he was young, instilling in him a deep love for Alberta.

2. The Scholar's Path: 1915-1928
Following his passion for agriculture, MacEwan attended the Ontario Agricultural College, then moved on to Iowa State College, earning his Master’s degree.

3. A Heart for Teaching: 1928-1946
With degrees in hand, MacEwan headed to the University of Saskatchewan, serving as a professor and inspiring countless students with his teachings on Western Canadian history and sustainable agriculture.

4. Writing the West: 1935-1970
MacEwan was also a prolific author. He penned numerous books and articles that detailed the rich history, culture, and ecological wonders of the Western Canadian prairies.

5. Mayor MacEwan: 1951-1954
In the 1950s, Grant MacEwan’s dedication to public service led him to politics. He became the Mayor of Calgary, championing urban development while maintaining a focus on preserving green spaces.

6. Lieutenant Governor Days: 1966-1974
His reputation and dedication propelled him further into public service, leading to his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. He used this platform to further promote conservation and education.

7. A Lifetime of Awards: 1960-1979
Throughout his life, Dr. MacEwan garnered numerous awards for his dedication, including the Order of Canada. Each recognition underscored his unwavering commitment to Alberta and its citizens.

8. Nature's Advocate: 1975-1980
Post-retirement, MacEwan's advocacy didn't stop. He continued to push for environmental protection, emphasizing the importance of preserving Alberta's natural landscapes for future generations.

9. Legacy at MacEwan University: 1971-Present
The Grant MacEwan Community College, now MacEwan University in Edmonton, was named in his honor. Today, it stands as a testament to his dedication to education and the province.

10. Final Farewell: 2000
Grant MacEwan passed away at the age of 97. He left behind an unmatched legacy of service, education, and advocacy.
